A Study to Evaluate the Role of Monopolar Electrocautery in Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy

Abstract :

INTRODUCTIONLaparoscopic cholecystectomy is one of the most commonsurgical procedures. Classically the cystic artery is controlledduring the procedure using simple metal clips. Recentlyultrasonic devices have been used successfully to achieveclosure and division of the cystic duct and artery but their costremains a concern. Although many feel that monopolarelectrocautery is an unsafe method of controlling the cysticartery because of concerns over both adequacy ofhemostasis and collateral tissue damage, Electrocautery issafe and effective for control of the cystic artery during[1] laparoscopic cholecystectomy We noted an increasingtrend among surgeons to use monopolar electrocautery forc o n t ro l o f t h e c y s t i c a r t e r y d u r i n g l a p a ro s c o p i ccholecystectomy. Here we report our experience with the useof monopolar electrocautery to control the cystic arteryduring laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
