Not all conjunctival lesions are benign- A case of Conjunctival Intraepithelial Neoplasia (CIN)

Ramsha Ahmed

Abstract :

Introduction: Ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN) consists of a oad and diverse spectrum of disease that involve abnormal growth of dysplastic squamous epithelial cells on the surface of the eye.Conjunctival intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) is non- invasive by definition; the basement memane remains intact and the underlying substantia propria is spared. It is a slow- growing tumor that arises from a single mutated cell on the ocular surface. It sometimes lead to significant local ocular surface damage and can progress to more invasive squamous cell carcinoma.Aims: To describe the presentation of conjunctival intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and identify features that distinguish it from other conjunctival lesions.Method: We evaluated a 60 year old male, farmer by occupation with c/o foreign body sensation, redness in re since 6 months with no history of HIV and HPV. A vascularized lesion from nasal limbus extending till cornea along with a gelatinous area was seen on slit lamp. Histopathology and AS OCT confirmed the diagnosis of CIN.Conclusion:Since CIN is a know precursor of SCC, CIN progression to invasive squamous cell carcinoma can be prevented with accurate and early diagnosis with clinical as well as imaging and histopathological modalities
